Beneath the radiant glow of the Beijing sky stands the 母校之光 Sculpture. What secrets does this artwork hold within its metallic embrace? Let’s embark on a journey to uncover the captivating stories surrounding this magnificent creation. The 母校之光 Sculpture, nestled within the grounds of Renmin University of China, embodies a significant chapter in Beijing’s history. This very location, once a clandestine bunker built in 1941 by Yasuji Okamura during the Japanese occupation, has witnessed a dramatic transformation. Originally part of a Western-style complex designed by Qing-dynasty architect Shen Qi in 1906, it later became a command center. This site holds the weight of the March 18th Massacre in 1926, where 47 lives were lost during protests. The university, founded by the Communist Party of China, has since converted the area into a patriotic education base, a stark contrast to its previous life. The Bunker, a non-profit contemporary art platform, occupied this space from 2017. It showcased experimental and conceptual art. Artists like Ko Sin Tung, Zhang Peili, Zhang Ding, and Xin Yunpeng graced its walls with their thought-provoking creations. Xin Yunpeng’s 2018 project, “Hope,” even reflected on the historical significance of the March 18th Massacre. The final exhibition, Zhou Yan’s “No Quarter” in 2019, explored China’s online environment. Though The Bunker is no more, its legacy continues. Now, the 母校之光 Sculpture stands as a testament to the area’s complex and layered past, from military command center to artistic haven, and now a symbol of patriotic education. The sculpture, bathed in the light of the present, silently reflects the shadows and hopes of the past. It serves as a reminder of the constant evolution of spaces and the enduring power of art and memory. It’s a journey through time, etched in metal and stone, echoing within the heart of Beijing.
