In 1900, a spark ignited in the world of neuroscience. The Biological Research Laboratory was born. This very spark would eventually blaze into the CSIC – Instituto Cajal. Now, let’s journey to 1906. Santiago Ramón y Cajal, the future namesake of the CSIC – Instituto Cajal, wins the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine. This monumental achievement further fueled the burgeoning field of neuroscience in Spain. As president of the Junta de Ampliación de Estudios, Cajal spearheaded the construction of a new research facility. In 1920, King Alfonso XIII decreed the creation of this building and appointed Cajal as its first director. The CSIC – Instituto Cajal, initially known as the Biological Research Laboratory, didn’t officially adopt its current name until 1932. It moved into its stunning new home on Cerro de San Blas hill that year. The name change honored the institute’s founder and driving force. From its inception, the CSIC – Instituto Cajal dedicated itself to unraveling the mysteries of the nervous system. The CSIC – Instituto Cajal isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to over a century of groundbreaking research and discovery. Today, the CSIC – Instituto Cajal stands on Avenida del Dr. Arce in Madrid. The current building was inaugurated in 1989. It houses state-of-the-art laboratories, specialized equipment, and a wealth of resources. This ensures that the CSIC – Instituto Cajal continues to be at the forefront of neuroscience research. Its legacy of excellence continues to inspire scientists and researchers worldwide.
