Doesn’t the name Art Windsor-Essex suggest something grand? It is more than just a name. It represents a cultural hub connecting two regions. Welcome to the Art Gallery of Windsor. Or rather, Art Windsor-Essex, as it’s now known.

Established in 1943, the Art Gallery of Windsor started humbly. Its original home was Walkerville’s Willistead Manor. This distinctive Tudor-Jacobean building housed the gallery from 1943 to 1975. Imagine art lovers gathering in this elegant manor. They were surrounded by both art and architectural beauty.

Kenneth Saltmarche directed the gallery and acquired its first collection. In 1947, the Willistead Gallery became a founding member. It joined The Southern Ontario Gallery Group. This group later became the Ontario Association of Art Galleries.

By 1958, Willistead Gallery was bursting at the seams. The small space couldn’t accommodate the crowds. Conflict arose between the Art Association and the library board. The Windsor art movement teetered on the brink. The Willistead Art Gallery became independent with its own board.

In 1970, an idea sparked. Why not transform the abandoned Carling Brewery warehouse? It was on the waterfront. It would provide a modern setting for the gallery. The Art Gallery of Windsor opened there in 1975. Over 20 years, it developed one of Ontario’s most significant collections of Canadian art.

Then came another major shift in 1993 for the Art Gallery of Windsor. The gallery moved to the Devonshire Mall. The waterfront warehouse was leased to house Casino Windsor. This move aimed to raise funds for expansion.

For six years, the Art Gallery of Windsor was in limbo. Should it stay in the mall? Should it renovate another location? Should it reclaim the warehouse? Or build anew? Finally, in 1999, a plan emerged. Dr. Lois Smedick unveiled plans for a new art museum on the old warehouse site. The Carling warehouse was torn down. A new modernist building rose in its place. This is the Art Gallery of Windsor you see today.

In 2014, the Chimczuk Museum was built on the first floor. The Art Gallery of Windsor occupies the upper two floors.

In April 2022, a new chapter began. The gallery was renamed Art Windsor-Essex. This change reflects a broader mission. The aim is to increase outreach via digital platforms. It will also focus on hands-on activities and expand into Essex County.

Today, Art Windsor-Essex stands as a cultural pillar. It showcases Canadian and Indigenous art. Its collection boasts over 4,000 works. The exhibition galleries span 15,000 square feet. You will find both changing exhibitions and ongoing displays. Art Windsor-Essex plays a unique role. It complements its neighbor, the Detroit Institute of the Arts. It focuses specifically on the visual arts of Canada. So, step inside and explore the artistic treasures within Art Windsor-Essex.
