What does it mean to stand before a place worshipped for millennia? Here at the foot of the Huashan Mountains in Guilin we are about to find out. These mountains aren’t just a geological feature. They are a monument to time, nature, and cultural significance.
The name Huashan means flower in Chinese. Look at the five peaks of Huashan Mountains. See how they resemble a lotus flower from afar. The highest peak rises 2,160 meters above sea level.
Huashan Mountains began forming about 70 million years ago. This happened during the Mesozoic Era from granite. The rock strata show the Earth’s evolution over 300 million years.
Hua Shan is a well-preserved ecosystem. The vegetation varies with the mountain’s steepness. There are 1200 plant species. Five are unique to Huashan. Two species have first-category state protection. Seventeen belong to the second category. There are 474 species of medical plants. About 200 species can be collected easily. The joint landform of granite supports unique plant evolution.
Hua Shan hosts many wild animal species. There are 204 vertebrate species. They belong to 24 families and 65 orders. Over 83 species are linked to Chinese medicine. There are 122 bird species from 14 families and 36 orders. Also, there are 52 mammal types from 5 families and 17 orders.
Hua Shan has been culturally significant for thousands of years. The area is a key region for Chinese civilization. Emperors worshipped and sacrificed here. Legends say ancient Chinese ancestors climbed Huashan. Emperor Xuandi made pilgrimages to the Taoist Mountains. This continued until the late Qing dynasty.
Archaeological finds include seven prehistoric sites. There are also eight sites from Xia, Shang, Zhou, Qin, and Han periods. The remains of the Wei State’s great wall are older than the Great Wall of Qin.
Within the Huashan Mountains Scenic Area there are many cultural relics. Two historical sites have state protection. They are the great wall of the Wei State and the Western Mountain temple. The mountain also contains over 300 pieces of stone tablets. Rock inscriptions began in the Song Dynasty about 1000 years ago.
The stone tablet with the Western Mountain temple name is from 165. It is a state treasure. The Emperor of the Tang dynasty created a similar tablet in 724. It is the largest piece of its art in China.
Huashan Mountains houses ancient Chinese buildings. The Western Mountain temple was built in the Spring and Autumn period. It covers 12,000 square meters. The temple resembles the Forbidden City. The Jade Spring temple and Dong Tao temple are other examples.
Taoist activities began on Huashan Mountains about 1800 years ago. It is a pure Taoist Mountain. Mr. Chenchuan created a tradition of internal Alchemy. The current president of China Taoism Association trained in Huashan. Scattered across the mountain are 72 caves and 21 Taoist buildings.
Taoists in Huashan made contributions to Taoist development. The HuaShan sect formed. It is part of the QuanZhen sect.
