“Who was San Maximiliano Kolbe?” some might ask. San Maximiliano Kolbe Parish stands as a testament to a remarkable life. He was born in Poland as Raimundo Kolbe. This happened in 1894.

At 13, Raimundo joined the Franciscan seminary taking the name Maximiliano. He felt a calling to serve God. Maximiliano’s devotion led him to Rome. There he founded the Militia of the Immaculata in 1917. This movement promoted Marian consecration. Its members were called MIs.

Returning to Poland in 1919, Father Maximilian began his missionary work. He established Niepokalanów. It was the City of the Immaculate near Warsaw. By 1939, it grew to be the largest Catholic religious house globally. Nearly 900 friars resided there.

Kolbe used modern techniques to spread his message. He published countless tracts, a daily newspaper, and a monthly magazine. The magazine had a circulation of over one million. He even started a radio station. Kolbe planned a motion picture studio. He was an apostle of mass media.

In 1930, he established a City of the Immaculata in Nagasaki Japan. He envisioned missionary centers worldwide. His insights anticipated Marian theology. They further developed the Church’s understanding of Mary.

During World War II in 1941, the Nazis imprisoned Father Maximilian. This happened in the Auschwitz death camp. There, he offered his life for another prisoner. He was condemned to slow death in a starvation bunker.

On August 14 1941, the Nazis ended his life with a fatal injection. Pope John Paul II canonized Maximilian in 1982. He was named a Martyr of Charity and Patron Saint of our difficult century.
