Whispers of history echo along the Chenjiayu Great Wall. Here at Chenjiayu Section 1, the stones whisper tales of resilience and change. Chenjiayu Great Wall stands as a testament to Ming Dynasty ingenuity. The wall stretches across the mountains, a continuous barrier built to protect the “capital of the north”. In 1644, Li Zicheng’s rebel army stormed through this very area. They bypassed the heavily fortified Badaling Pass, using a local’s tip. They found a weakly defended “Stone Gorge Pass” between Badaling and Chenjiayu. Li Zicheng used this strategic advantage to bypass Badaling and capture Beijing, ending the Ming Dynasty. Chenjiayu Great Wall, an imposing structure averaging 7.8 meters high and up to 14 meters at its peak, wasn’t always appreciated. In the 1960s and 70s, villagers lacking building materials took bricks from the wall. They used mules to transport six bricks at a time, and men carried two bricks on their backs. It took over two hours to bring eight bricks down the mountain. Today, remnants of these Great Wall bricks can be found in the village. Chenjiayu Great Wall remains largely untouched by modern restoration, preserving its original Ming Dynasty character. Shrouded in the tranquility of the mountains, it offers a stark contrast to the bustling tourist attractions of Badaling. While locals once saw little value in the wall, it now attracts outdoor enthusiasts and foreign tourists. Though few in number, they appreciate the untamed beauty and historical whispers of Chenjiayu Section 1. The wall stands as a silent witness to the passage of time, its stones whispering stories of resilience, change, and the enduring power of history.
