St. Andreas Norf

A hidden gem whispers tales of resilience at St. Andreas Norf. St. Andreas Norf stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of faith. This magnificent Rococo church, nestled in the heart of Neuss’s Norf district, first opened its doors in 1772. Yet, its story begins long before that, intertwined with a predecessor known as “Alt-St. Andreas.” A document from 817 mentions land “at the side of St. Andreas,” hinting at an even earlier structure. St. Andreas Norf itself was initially commissioned not as a parish church, but as a chapel for the noblewomen residing in the nearby Schloss Müggenburg. Designed by Johann Nosthoffen, the church reflects the elegant Rococo style prevalent in the mid-18th century. The story of St. Andreas Norf is one of adaptation and transformation. The noblewomen’s tenure was short-lived, ending in 1794. The Norfer parish, having outgrown their older, dilapidated church, adopted St. Andreas as their own in 1820. The church was rededicated to St. Andrew, the parish’s patron saint. The building continued to evolve, with a north tower added between 1857 and 1868. Later, in the early 20th century, side aisles were added, designed by Klaus Röhlinger, further expanding the church’s capacity and grandeur. Inside St. Andreas Norf, the 18th-century aesthetic has been remarkably preserved. The high altar, a centerpiece of the church, features a painted crucifixion scene and a gilded dove representing the Holy Spirit. Other notable features include a statue of the Immaculata, possibly the work of renowned sculptor Gabriel Grupello, and a collection of Rococo saint figures, including St. Andrew and St. Matthias. St. Andreas Norf stands as a symbol of continuity and renewal. It has witnessed changing times, serving different communities, yet always remaining a focal point of faith.
