Gazing upon the unassuming white stucco of Holy Transfiguration of Christ, one might not immediately grasp the profound history held within its walls. This seemingly simple structure, nestled in Denver’s Globeville neighborhood, has borne witness to over a century of triumphs, struggles, and unwavering faith. Holy Transfiguration of Christ isn’t just a building; it’s a living testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring power of belief. Founded in 1898 by Carpatho-Rusyn and Serbian immigrants fleeing oppression in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Holy Transfiguration of Christ began as a beacon of hope in a new land. These early settlers, many of whom were laborers, pooled their meager savings, each contributing $50, a substantial sum at the time, to erect this sanctuary. Some, like John Kohut, even contributed their labor, hand-making bricks for the construction. Originally incorporated as the “Greek Catholic Church, Transfiguration of Christ,” the parish faced early challenges, including the tragic death of their first priest, Fr Nicholas Seregely. In 1903, under the guidance of Bishop Tikhon, who would later become a Saint, Holy Transfiguration of Christ was received into the Russian Orthodox Church, marking a pivotal moment in its history. The church became the first Orthodox Church in Colorado. Holy Transfiguration of Christ even holds a unique connection to St. Tikhon. He consecrated the church in 1905, personally crafting the original altar table and placing relics of his patron saint within it. This original altar table remains to this day, encased within the current one. A testament to this visit, an icon in the narthex depicts St. Tikhon holding Holy Transfiguration of Christ in his hands. He is revered by the faithful not only as a Saint but as the “Consecrator of this Holy Temple.” The 20th century brought numerous trials. The Russian Revolution cut off financial support from Russia. The “Living Church” schism caused further division. Internal conflicts arose, even leading to a period where two factions held services in separate locations. Yet, Holy Transfiguration of Christ persevered. The parish weathered the Great Depression, the disruptive construction of Interstates 25 and 70 through Globeville, and even a devastating flood in 1965. Despite plans to relocate, a deep-seated connection to the Globeville community kept the church rooted in its original location. The arrival of Father Joseph Hirsch and Matushka Paulette in 1984 ushered in a period of revitalization for both the church and the surrounding neighborhood. They initiated numerous improvements to the church and played a vital role in the establishment of the Globeville Neighborhood Association, contributing to the area’s ongoing revitalization. Today, Holy Transfiguration of Christ continues to serve a diverse community, a testament to the enduring vision of its founders. Its story echoes through the generations, a powerful reminder of faith, resilience, and the transformative power of community.
