Established in 1906 as the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts, CCS initially sought to preserve beauty and craftsmanship in a rapidly industrializing world. The College for Creative Studies began humbly, offering informal classes in drawing, woodcarving, and design. They even opened a gallery in 1911, showcasing student work alongside established artists. As Detroit grew, so did the College for Creative Studies. It expanded its offerings and became one of the first arts and crafts institutions to provide a formal four-year art program in 1926. CCS was deeply intertwined with the rise of the auto industry. In the 1930s, the school’s gallery audaciously presented the automobile as an art form. Around the same time, CCS introduced programs in commercial art and industrial design, further solidifying its connection to Detroit’s evolving identity. Fast forward to 1958. The College for Creative Studies moved to its current location near Detroit’s cultural center. The move placed students within easy reach of the Detroit Institute of Arts. CCS has over 1,400 students pursuing Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees in a variety of fields.
