Did you know that you are standing on what was once considered the First City of Delhi? This is Qila Rai Pithora. Today we will delve into the story of this fortified complex. It is a tale of kings, battles, and the shifting sands of time.

Qila Rai Pithora’s story begins long before its namesake, Prithviraj Chauhan. The Tomar Rajputs laid the foundation. Anangpal Tomar, in the 11th century, built Lal Kot. Lal Kot became the heart of what we now call Qila Rai Pithora. Anangpal II played a key role. He is credited with repopulating Indraprastha. He gave it the name Delhi.

Imagine Lal Kot. It was a formidable structure. Its walls stretched over two miles. They rose sixty feet high. They were thirty feet thick. Hasan Nizami praised it. He was a Persian author in the Delhi Sultanate. He said no other fort equaled its height and firmness.

Anangpal Tomar brought the Iron Pillar to Delhi. He placed it as a central point. Numerous palaces and temples sprung up around it. Finally, Lal Kot was built encircling them all. The Iron Pillar stands even today in the Qutb Minar complex. It defies rust and time.

Later, Prithviraj Chauhan expanded the fort. He extended the existing Lal Kot. He created Qila Rai Pithora. The fort became a symbol of Rajput power. It was a defense against invaders. The Chauhan Rajputs seized Delhi from the Tomar Rajputs.

However, Qila Rai Pithora’s glory was not to last. In 1192, Muhammad Ghori conquered the Chahamana kingdom. Qutb al-Din Aibak, Ghori’s governor, took over Qila Rai Pithora. He renamed it Dilhi.

Over time, Qila Rai Pithora faded from prominence. New forts and cities arose. The fort fell into disrepair. It was rediscovered in the 20th century. Archaeological excavations revealed its past. The Archaeological Survey of India began restoration work.

Today, Qila Rai Pithora’s remains are scattered. They can be seen across South Delhi. Visit Saket. Explore Mehrauli around the Qutb complex. Look in Sanjay Van, Kishangarh, and Vasant Kunj. These areas hold pieces of the past.

The Qutb Minar complex stands within the fort. The Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque is here too. It was the first mosque in Delhi. It was constructed with Hindu sculptors. Hindu and Islamic styles blend here.

Qila Rai Pithora serves as a reminder. It connects the transition from Rajput to Muslim rule. It stands as a testament. It represents the architectural prowess of the Chauhan dynasty. It marks a significant era in Delhi’s history. So take a moment to reflect. You are standing on ground. This ground has witnessed the rise and fall of empires. Qila Rai Pithora is a silent witness. It stands as an enduring symbol of Delhi’s past.
