On the corner of Piquette and Beaubien, in Detroit’s bustling Milwaukee Junction neighborhood, stands the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant. This isn’t just any old building. This is the birthplace of the Model T, the car that put America on wheels. The Ford Piquette Avenue Plant opened its doors in 1904, becoming Ford Motor Company’s second production facility. Before the Model T, the plant produced a variety of models, including the B, C, F, K, N, R, and S. Each model contributed to Ford’s growing understanding of automotive manufacturing. The Ford Piquette Avenue Plant wasn’t just about production. It was a hub of innovation. Here, early experiments with a moving assembly line took place. Workers tied a rope to a Model N chassis and pulled it across the factory floor. This seemingly simple experiment foreshadowed the revolutionary assembly line process that would later define automotive manufacturing. On June 4, 1908, the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant achieved a milestone. They produced 101 cars in a single day, a record at the time. This demonstrated the increasing efficiency of their production methods. In January 1907, a small room on the third floor became the secret design studio for the Model T. Henry Ford, along with draftsman Joseph Galamb, engineer Childe Harold Wills, and machinist C.J. Smith, toiled away, shaping the future of American transportation. The first Model T rolled out of the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant on September 27, 1908. The demand was overwhelming. Ford had to stop taking orders for two months just to catch up. By 1910, production moved to the larger Highland Park Ford Plant, but the legacy of the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant was cemented. The first 14,000 Model Ts, the vanguard of a revolution, were born within these walls. Today, the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant stands as a museum. It’s a testament to the ingenuity and vision of Henry Ford and his team. Here, you can see recreations of Henry Ford’s office and the secret experimental room, as well as a collection of early Ford models. It offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in automotive history, reminding us of the humble beginnings of an iconic American brand.
