Hudson County Courthouse

Elevated above Newark Avenue, the Hudson County Courthouse stands as a testament to the grandeur of the Beaux-Arts architectural style. The Hudson County Courthouse opened its doors in 1910. Its construction, a hefty $3,328,016.56 investment, spanned from 1906 to 1910. This six-story structure served as the heart of Hudson County government until 1966. It then faced a period of vacancy and even the threat of demolition. Thankfully, its historical significance was recognized. The Hudson County Courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, sparking a restoration effort that brought it back to life in 1985. Today, the Hudson County Courthouse, also known as the Justice William J. Brennan Jr. Courthouse, still serves the community. It houses eight active courtrooms and the offices of the County Executive and the Hudson County Surrogate. The building has even played a role in popular culture, appearing in shows like “Law & Order” and the film “Joker.” Designed by Hugh Roberts, a Jersey City native and prominent architect, the courthouse’s construction was not without controversy. The direct appointment of Roberts, brother-in-law to a future US Senator and New Jersey Governor, sparked local debate. The land acquisition process also raised eyebrows, leading to indictments for graft against some officials. Built with granite from Hallowell, Maine, the courthouse’s facade boasts four imposing Corinthian columns. A frieze above the entrance displays the thought-provoking inscription: “Precedent Makes Law; If You Stand Well, Stand Still.” Inside, a world of art and color awaits. Francis David Millet, known for his work at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, oversaw the interior decoration. Millet himself contributed lunettes, alongside other renowned artists like Charles Yardley Turner and Kenyon Cox. Edwin Blashfield’s artistry graces the glass dome and pendentives. The legislative chamber features murals by Howard Pyle, depicting early Dutch and English life in New Jersey. The rotunda’s grandeur is breathtaking, with its three stories opening up to a dome adorned with zodiac signs and a stunning stained-glass center. The space evokes a sense of governmental dignity and the enduring power of law. The Hudson County Courthouse’s journey from near-demolition to restored glory is a testament to its enduring value.
