Is this where the roar of a lion once echoed through the ancient walls? This, my friends, is Hz. Osman Camii. It may not look like much from the outside, but this mosque whispers tales of a time when Ankara was a vital crossroads of empires. Let me tell you about Hz. Osman Camii. It is one of the oldest mosques in Turkey, dating back to 1290. It was built during the reign of Mesud II, a sultan from the Anatolian Seljuk dynasty. Imagine the bustling city back then, a vibrant mix of traders and artisans, scholars and soldiers, all living under the Seljuk banner. Hz. Osman Camii was built by two Ahi leaders, Hüsamettin and Hasaneddin. The Ahi were a powerful fraternity of craftsmen and merchants. They played a significant role in Seljuk society, promoting trade and social welfare. Their legacy lives on in the sturdy wooden beams and 24 large wooden columns that hold up the mosque’s roof. But this mosque holds a secret that gave it its popular name: Aslanhane, meaning “House of the Lion”. A lion statue once stood here, a powerful symbol of both the Seljuks and the Ahi. Sadly, the statue was later buried within the mosque’s walls, lost to history. But if you listen closely, you might just hear the faint echo of its roar. Hz. Osman Camii has survived Mongol invasions, the rise of the Ottomans, and the birth of modern Turkey. It has been repaired and restored many times, most recently in 2010-2013 by the Directorate General of Foundations. Each restoration has breathed new life into this ancient place of worship, allowing it to continue serving the community. And so, Hz. Osman Camii still stands, a testament to the enduring power of faith and the rich tapestry of Ankara’s history.
