Gazing across the Detroit River, did you ever imagine an island oasis? Right here, nestled between the US and Canada, lies Belle Isle. Belle Isle is more than just an island. It’s a 982-acre park, larger than New York’s Central Park. Belle Isle boasts a rich history, dating back to the 18th century when French colonists settled the area. Originally called Hog Island, it served as a safe haven for livestock. Three Native American tribes, the Ojibwe, Chippewa, and Ottawa, also called this island home. In 1769, the island was sold to a British Lieutenant for a rather unusual price: eight barrels of rum, three rolls of tobacco, six pounds of vermillion paint, and a wampum belt. The name officially changed to Belle Isle in 1845, possibly in honor of Governor Lewis Cass’s daughter, Isabelle. Belle Isle became a public park in 1880. The city hired famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead, the designer of Central Park, to create a grand vision. While Olmstead favored simplicity, the city officials desired a more elaborate design. This clash of visions led to Olmstead’s departure, and little of his original plan was implemented. A unique canal system was dug to drain the marshy areas, which later became a popular spot for canoeing and kayaking. The Detroit Opera House Orchestra even held weekly concerts, their melodies echoing across the water. The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw a flurry of additions: a deer park (which later became a zoo), a police station, a swing bridge, and the Detroit Boat Club, one of the nation’s oldest rowing clubs. The Belle Isle Conservatory, the oldest continually running conservatory in the country, opened in 1904, along with the Nature Center. The Casino, a gathering place for public events, followed in 1908. A bathhouse and bathing beach were added in 1909. During World War II, Belle Isle served a different purpose. It was closed to the public and used for troop training, preparing soldiers for the battle of Iwo Jima. A US Coast Guard station was also established on the island in 1942. Belle Isle even played a role during the Cold War, housing a Nike Air Defense System from 1955 to 1968. Today, remnants of this system can still be found, marked by concrete chunks and sparse vegetation. Belle Isle has weathered storms, both literal and figurative. Fires, economic downturns, and even a city bankruptcy have threatened its existence. Yet, the island has persevered, a testament to its resilience. As you stand here, on Belle Isle, take a moment to appreciate its vibrant history. From Hog Island to a cherished state park, Belle Isle continues to be a treasured destination.
