The Luce Chapel is a Christian chapel. It is located in Xitun District Taichung in Taiwan. It was designed by I. M. Pei and Chi-kuan Chen. The chapel’s name honors Reverend Henry W. Luce. He was an American missionary in China. He was also the father of publisher Henry R. Luce.
Originally planned in 1954 the project was put on hold. Construction finally began in September 1962. It concluded in November 1963. The total cost was approximately US$125000.
The Luce Chapel occupies a three-acre zone. It has a hexagonal base. The chapel’s floor area covers 477 square meters. This includes a nave with 500 seats. The church is a tent-like structure. Four warped leaves rise to a height of 19.2 meters. This makes it a central landmark.
Initially architects considered a wooden structure. However they abandoned this idea. This was due to humidity and earthquake concerns.
