Marvelous isn’t it? This is La Casa de Vacas.
La Casa de Vacas in Madrid’s Retiro Park isn’t just a pretty building. It’s a living testament to Madrid’s history. Originally built in 1833 it served a much more humble purpose. It was a “Reserved House of the Royal Site of El Buen Retiro”. Ordered by Fernando VII it was far from the cultural center it is today.
Later it transformed. Between 1873 and 1874 it became a dairy. Imagine fresh milk sold right here. People could even enjoy it at a nearby bar. This lively scene was a far cry from its royal beginnings.
The building’s story continued to evolve. In 1921 it became the Ideal Retiro restaurant. Dancing and even ice skating were popular activities. After the Spanish Civil War La Casa de Vacas fell into disrepair. Then in 1960 it reopened as the Pavillón nightclub. Marlene Dietrich herself performed here! It became one of Madrid’s most famous hotspots. Its popularity continued until 1979.
Sadly in 1983 a devastating fire damaged the abandoned building. But La Casa de Vacas wasn’t finished. It was rebuilt in 1985 by architect Guillermo Costa Pérez-Herrero. The Madrid City Council took over its management.
Since 1987 La Casa de Vacas has been a cultural center. It hosts exhibitions and concerts. It even has a theatre. The theatre was temporarily closed in 2012 but reopened in 2012. Today it’s known as El Teatro del Parque. This vibrant space continues to host performances workshops and book presentations.
La Casa de Vacas also plays host to the annual Salón de Otoño. This art exhibition showcases the work of Spanish and international artists. The building has even been used for the BMW Painting Prize.
Today La Casa de Vacas is accessible to everyone. It’s a remarkable example of adaptation and resilience. It stands as a symbol of Madrid’s rich and ever-evolving cultural landscape.
