Hidden within Rostock’s sprawling coastal forest lies a place called Schnatermann. Its name whispers tales of watchful eyes and ancient boundaries. Schnatermann wasn’t always a tranquil haven. It was once a bustling hub for timber trade, guarded by vigilant “Schnatermann,” the gatekeepers of the forest’s precious wood. These guards oversaw the “Schlagbäume,” or barriers, strategically placed to protect the valuable timber. The name “Schnatermann” itself is an echo of this history, a fusion of the Slavic word “schnat” meaning boundary, and the German word “mann.” Over time, this title shifted from describing the watchman to encompassing the area they protected. Eventually, it came to denote the very building that stands before you, the Schnatermann inn. This very building began its life as the “Revierförsterei,” the forester’s lodge. It later transformed into the welcoming inn you see today. The inn, nestled between the whispering trees of the Rostocker Heide and the lapping waters of the Breitling, has long offered respite to weary travelers. Today, Schnatermann is more than just an inn. It is a gateway to nature, a place where the ancient forest meets the vast expanse of the Baltic Sea. The area boasts a marina for those arriving by water and a small sandy beach perfect for quiet contemplation. The Schnatermann inn sadly closed its doors in 2017/2018 but was revived again in 2019, continuing its long tradition of hospitality. You can still enjoy the peace and beauty here. Much of the area falls under the protection of the Schnatermann Nature Reserve. So, as you stand here, at the edge of the Breitling, remember the watchful eyes of the past. Recall the echoes of bustling trade and the steadfast guardians of the forest. The Schnatermann is a testament to the enduring power of nature. It is a place where history and tranquility intertwine, offering a unique escape from the everyday world.
