Here at the Sichuan University – Hong Kong Polytechnic Institute for Disaster Management and Reconstruction, we see that question answered with a resounding “yes”. This institute, often called IDMR for short, stands as a testament to the spirit of resilience. It represents a unique partnership born from tragedy, a collaboration between Sichuan University and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The IDMR story begins with the devastating Wenchuan earthquake of 2008. The Hong Kong Jockey Club donated a significant sum, RMB 200 million, to help Sichuan rebuild. This generous act of philanthropy led to the creation of the IDMR. Inaugurated in 2013, the Sichuan University – Hong Kong Polytechnic Institute for Disaster Management and Reconstruction is the first of its kind in China. It’s a place where scientific research, talent development, and social services converge. It’s a hub where the lessons learned from disaster inform strategies for prevention, response, and reconstruction. The IDMR has educated over 645 master’s and doctoral students since its inception. These graduates are now on the front lines of disaster management, serving not only Sichuan but the entire country. Their expertise ranges from understanding geological hazards like earthquakes and landslides to tackling urban disaster challenges and ensuring post-disaster environmental management. The IDMR is not just an ivory tower of academia. It’s deeply engaged in public service, extending its expertise to communities and individuals. Their faculty has been involved in investigating and assessing damage in numerous disasters, including the recent earthquake in Turkey in 2023. They shared valuable knowledge gleaned from their extensive experience with earthquakes in Sichuan, contributing to global recovery and rebuilding efforts.
