Deep within the heart of Chengdu lies Erwang Temple. But have you heard the story of its names? It is not just a temple. It is a memorial to a father and son.
Erwang Temple was built to honor Li Bing and his son Li Erlang. They were posthumously promoted to kings during the Song Dynasty. The name Erwang means Two Kings Temple.
First constructed during the Northern and Southern Dynasties around 420 A.D., the Erwang Temple that stands today was rebuilt during the Qing Dynasty. It covers an area of 50000 square meters. The setting is based on the natural environment.
Before Li Bing’s work, Chengdu suffered from floods and droughts. Li Bing designed the Dujiangyan Irrigation System. This tamed the Min River. In 972 A.D., Chengdu had a great harvest. The people were grateful to Li Bing. They built a statue of his son Li Erlang. Both father and son became kings in the people’s hearts.
Inside Erwang Temple, you can find statues of Li Bing and Li Erlang. Look for the pithy formula for water control that Li Bing carved on a stone stele. One saying is, When the river flows in zigzags cut a straight channel.
Each year, local people celebrate the Erwang Temple Fair. It takes place from June 24th to June 26th of the Chinese lunar calendar. The dates are reputedly their birthdays. People express gratitude to Li Bing and his son during this time.
During the fair, the city comes alive. People bring sacrifices. They pray for good weather and harvests. The smell of incense fills the air. Traditional Sichuan Opera performances attract many.
Erwang Temple suffered damage in the 2008 earthquake. The entrance gate was ruined. Some palaces and halls collapsed. Reconstruction efforts are ongoing.
