Is it just me or does the air around the Al-Aqsa Mosque seem to vibrate with stories untold? We are standing before a site revered by Muslims worldwide. This is Al-Aqsa Mosque. It is located in Jerusalem’s Old City. It is the jewel in the crown of this historic place.
Let me share why this place holds such immense importance. Islamic tradition tells us that the Prophet Muhammad undertook a miraculous night journey. This journey went from Mecca to Jerusalem. The Quran mentions this event. It says Muhammad was transported from “the sacred place of worship” to “the farther place of worship”. That farther place is Al-Aqsa.
Muslims believe that Muhammad led past prophets in prayer here. Abraham Moses and Jesus were among them. It was from here that Muhammad ascended to heaven. This was to meet with God. The Dome of the Rock stands on the very spot of this ascension.
Now some interesting facts you may not know. The name Al-Aqsa has a double meaning in Arabic. It means “the furthest”. This refers to its distance from Mecca. It also means “the supreme”. This reflects its high status in Islam.
Did you know that the Al-Aqsa Mosque isn’t just one building? The term Al-Aqsa Mosque often includes the entire plaza. This plaza is also home to the Dome of the Rock. The plaza is formally known as Al-Haram al-Sharif. That means “the Noble Sanctuary”.
The history of Al-Aqsa is rich and complex. It has seen many rulers. It has undergone numerous transformations. The mosque was reconstructed under the Umayyad dynasty. This happened between 688 and 691 AD. Renovations occurred under the Abbasids and Fatimids.
A major turning point came when the Crusaders occupied Jerusalem. They turned the Dome of the Rock into their headquarters in 1099 AD. They covered the building in Christian iconography. But Saladin reconquered Jerusalem in 1187 AD. He returned the building to its original function as a mosque.
The Mamluks and Ottomans also contributed to the mosque’s restoration. The Hashemites added gold-colored aluminum sheets to the dome. They also restored the Islamic typography.
The Al-Aqsa Mosque has also been a site of tension. It is located on the Temple Mount. This is a place significant to both Jews and Muslims. The Temple Mount was the site of the Temple of Jerusalem. This adds another layer to the site’s importance.
In modern times Al-Aqsa has become a focal point in the Arab-Israeli conflict. Israel occupied East Jerusalem in 1967. While the plaza remained under the custodianship of an Islamic trust. Restrictions on Palestinian Muslims’ access have caused concern. Excavation projects and evictions in nearby areas have also contributed to these concerns.
Protecting the Al-Aqsa Mosque is seen by Palestinians as a national duty. The increased Israeli presence is seen as an attempt to claim ownership. This is ownership over the site and Palestinian history.
As we stand here let us reflect on the weight of history. Let us think about the faith and the struggles. Let us appreciate the enduring spirit of this sacred place. The Al-Aqsa Mosque continues to stand. It is a testament to Jerusalem’s layered past.
