In 1605, a small chapel arose near Xuanwumen. This marked the humble beginnings of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Xianwumen. The Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci had just arrived in Beijing. The Wanli Emperor granted him residence and allowed this modest place of worship. It was built in the Chinese style, a cross atop the entrance its only Christian marker. This Xuanwumen Chapel, as it was then known, was a testament to the growing presence of Catholicism in China. The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Xianwumen has seen many transformations over the centuries. In 1650, under Johann Adam Schall von Bell, a new church was built on the chapel site. The Shunzhi Emperor, a friend to Schall, even visited the church. He gifted a stela proclaiming it “built by Imperial Order.” The church grew in stature, becoming a cathedral in 1690 with the arrival of Bishop Bernardin della Chiesa. A European-style renovation followed. Sadly, an earthquake in 1720 brought this structure down. A baroque-style replacement rose, only to be damaged by another earthquake in 1730. The Yongzheng Emperor aided in its repair, and the cathedral emerged with brighter, grander windows. Fire ravaged the cathedral in 1775. The Qianlong Emperor generously funded its restoration and bestowed a calligraphed board. The Daoguang Emperor, however, confiscated the cathedral in 1838 amidst political tensions. It remained closed until 1860, reopening after the Second Opium War. The Boxer Rebellion brought destruction in 1900. The cathedral was completely destroyed. The present structure, completed in 1904, bears the coat of arms of Pope Pius X. It stands as a symbol of resilience and faith, echoing the trials and triumphs of the Catholic Church in China. In 1979, it witnessed the consecration of Bishop Michael Fu Tieshan, a significant event after the Cultural Revolution. The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Xianwumen continues to serve as a beacon for Catholics in Beijing, offering masses in multiple languages, including English. It stands not only as the oldest Catholic church in Beijing but as a living testament to a history interwoven with emperors, Jesuits, disasters, and unwavering faith.
