Hidden in plain sight, the Encina Power Station whispers stories of San Diego’s past. This massive structure, once a vital source of electricity, stands as a testament to the region’s growth and changing energy needs. Encina Power Station began operations in 1954. It quickly became a key player in powering the burgeoning San Diego area. The plant’s location on Agua Hedionda Lagoon offered a unique cooling system, utilizing the lagoon’s waters. This very lagoon, home to diverse wildlife, played a critical role in the power station’s function. Encina Power Station’s story isn’t just about electricity. It’s intertwined with the story of the lagoon itself. Once a “stinking pool,” the lagoon was transformed into a vibrant ecosystem thanks to the continuous tidal flow created for the plant’s cooling system. In later years, Encina Power Station faced challenges. Expansion plans were met with opposition from residents and environmentalists. The closure of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station in 2012, however, shifted the narrative. The need for reliable power led to the approval of a new, state-of-the-art plant adjacent to Encina Power Station. This modern facility, fueled by natural gas, eventually replaced the iconic 400-foot smokestack that had long dominated the Carlsbad skyline. The old Encina Power Station was officially retired on December 11, 2018. The demolition process was a significant undertaking, with thousands of tons of materials recycled or disposed of. Even the concrete from the massive smokestack found a new purpose, used as fill to restore the site. Today, the site of the Encina Power Station is poised for a new chapter. While the power plant is gone, the Carlsbad Energy Center, the desalination plant, and the aquafarm remain, testaments to the evolving landscape of energy and resource management in San Diego.
