Did you know that the Lycee Francais de Madrid boasts a history stretching back to 1884? It began as the College of the French Benevolent Society a small school tucked away on Calle Marques de la Ensenada. Imagine the students then just fifty of them learning in a modest apartment. The Lycee Francais de Madrid as we know it today is a direct descendant of this humble beginning.

This prestigious institution now stands as a testament to Franco-Spanish collaboration. It’s an integral part of the cultural fabric of Madrid. The Lycee Francais de Madrid is a beacon of French education in Spain. It follows the rigorous curriculum of the French National Education system. The school provides a high-quality education. This makes it extremely attractive to families in Madrid.

The Lycee Francais de Madrid wasn’t always located where it is today. It faced numerous challenges. One such challenge occurred during the Spanish Civil War. The school was forced to close its doors. After the war it reopened. Student numbers swelled rapidly. By 1964 the school had over 2200 students.

Its growth however outstripped the capacity of the old building on Calle Marques de la Ensenada. The solution? A move to its current location in the Conde de Orgaz park. This happened in 1969. The new campus was a modern marvel. Designed by a team of architects including Rodrigo Orgaz and the Frenchmen Duthuil and Sonrel. This beautiful building exemplifies Le Corbusier’s architectural ideals.

In 1980 the Lycee Francais de Madrid faced another threat. A journalist wrote a passionate letter to El Pais. This letter urged the saving of the school which was threatened with closure due to financial problems. Thankfully the school survived. It continues to thrive today. It expanded further in 1985 with a new building to accommodate its youngest students. Then in 1998 another site opened in La Moraleja. It became an annex of the main school.

The Lycee Francais de Madrid prides itself on academic excellence. Its curriculum emphasizes both French and Spanish languages and cultures. The school aims to help students develop their personality as well as their base learnings. This is clearly reflected in the achievements of its distinguished alumni. Notable alumni include famous actors such as Javier Bardem and Hiba Abouk. There are also musicians and politicians like Hugues Aufray. Even the sons of Zinedine Zidane studied here.

Since 2013 the Lycee Francais de Madrid has also been a leader in sustainable development. It actively works to reduce its ecological footprint. This commitment to environmental responsibility makes it a model institution.

The Lycee Francais de Madrid is more than just a school. It is a vibrant community. It’s a place where students from diverse backgrounds learn grow and thrive. Its remarkable journey spanning more than a century underscores its resilience its dedication to education and its significant contributions to both French and Spanish cultures. It’s a story of growth adaptation and enduring success. It’s a story worth remembering as we stand here today.
