In 1891, a hopeful town named Fletcher arose on the Colorado prairie, the future site of what we now know as Aurora. It started small, just four square miles, stretching from Yosemite to Peoria and 6th to 26th. Imagine, just 39 souls, a handful of brick houses with the then-luxury of indoor plumbing, and dreams as vast as the open sky above. Aurora’s early days were a test of resilience. Drought crippled the fledgling water system and the Silver Panic of 1893 caused property values to plummet. Yet, the town held on. In 1907, Fletcher was reborn as Aurora, a name that hinted at brighter days to come. Aurora continued to grow, officially becoming a city in 1928 with over 2,000 residents. The city seal, designed in the 1950s, reflects Aurora’s values with five stars representing home, church, school, business, and industry. The post-war era saw a boom thanks to the establishment of Lowry Air Force Base, Fitzsimons Army Hospital, and Buckley Space Force Base. These bases transformed Aurora into a hub for military families, adding to its growing diversity. Today, Aurora sprawls across 164 square miles and is home to over 386,000 people. It’s a vibrant tapestry woven from threads of tradition and innovation. Aurora is a major player in the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area, shaping both the economy and culture of the region. Did you know that over 90 languages are spoken in Aurora’s public schools? This reflects the city’s rich cultural diversity, a testament to its welcoming spirit. Aurora’s story is etched in its historic landmarks, whispering tales of its journey from a humble trolley town to a bustling modern city. Places like the Stanley Marketplace, a revitalized aviation factory, embody Aurora’s spirit of renewal. From its humble beginnings as Fletcher, Aurora has blossomed into a city of opportunity, its history intertwined with resilience, growth, and a diverse community.
