The Cooley School Plaque marks the spot of the former Cooley School. This school played a vital role in the early development of Houston Heights. Daniel Denton Cooley, affectionately called the Father of Houston Heights, and his wife Helen Grace Winfield Cooley were passionate about education. They financed the construction of the Heights’ first school.
In the fall of 1894, Cooley School opened its doors. It started as a simple one-room schoolhouse. An unfinished upstairs room was completed in 1896. The Heights experienced rapid growth. Consequently, the Cooley School expanded. By 1906, it had six rooms. By 1912, it boasted sixteen.
Olle J. Lorehn designed the 1912 expansion. He was a prominent Houston architect. Lorehn enveloped the original structure in a new Georgian-style building. He was also the architect behind Houston’s first skyscraper and apartment building.
Cooley School’s history reflects the evolution of Houston Heights. Initially, it was a Common School in County School District No. 25. In 1898, the municipality of Houston Heights took over. As the community grew, financial pressures mounted. This led to consolidation with the City of Houston in 1918. Cooley School then became part of the Houston Independent School District.
Tragedy struck in 1961. A fire destroyed the 1912 school building. But the community was resilient. The school was rebuilt and reopened the following year. Cooley School served as an elementary school until 1980. Afterward, it became an HISD administrative building.
In 2010, the property changed hands. It was sold for residential development. Yet, the Cooley School’s legacy endures.
