Werner Otto. A name synonymous with entrepreneurial spirit. Here lies a man who not only built a business empire but also embodied resilience and a commitment to social responsibility. Born in Seelow in 1909, Werner Otto’s life was a testament to the power of perseverance. His early life was marked by both a sheltered upbringing and the harsh realities of economic hardship. He witnessed his father’s grocery store go bankrupt during the inflation of the 1920s. This experience instilled in him a deep desire for autonomy and a drive to succeed. Otto’s entrepreneurial journey began modestly with a small shop in Szczecin. However, his strong will and astute business sense propelled him forward. In 1934, his anti-Nazi activism led to his imprisonment. This experience further solidified his resolve and shaped his understanding of social responsibility. After his release, he relocated to Kulm an der Weichsel with his wife and children. World War II brought further challenges, including severe injuries sustained while serving at the front. Yet, even amidst the devastation of postwar Germany, Otto’s spirit remained unbroken. He and his family made their way to Hamburg, where he embarked on a new chapter. He initially established a shoe factory, but the post-war economic landscape proved challenging. A chance encounter with a mail-order catalog sparked an idea that would transform his life and the retail industry. In 1949, just four days after his 40th birthday, he registered his mail-order business. Operating from two barracks in Hamburg-Schnelsen, he produced a humble 14-page catalog, delivering orders by bicycle. This modest beginning laid the foundation for what would become the Otto Group, a global retail giant. Otto’s leadership extended beyond business. He championed the welfare of his employees, introducing the five-day work week and establishing a welfare fund. His motto, “Panta rhei” – everything flows – reflected his adaptable nature and forward-thinking approach. He expanded his ventures into real estate, developing industrial parks and residential buildings in Canada and the USA. Even in his late fifties, Otto’s entrepreneurial drive remained undimmed. He founded ECE Projektmanagement, a leading shopping center development company. Throughout his long and successful career, Werner Otto emphasized the importance of empowering his management teams to act independently. He understood that true growth lay not in micromanaging but in fostering a culture of autonomy and innovation. Here lies a man who exemplified not only business acumen but also social consciousness. His legacy is one of resilience, vision, and a commitment to giving back to the community.
