Built in 1911 the Daniels & Fisher Tower was once the tallest building between the Mississippi River and the state of California. Standing tall at 325 feet it dominated the Denver skyline. Designed by Frederick Sterner its architecture mimics the Campanile of St Mark’s in Venice. The Daniels & Fisher department store occupied the building. The store was once the largest in Denver boasting 400000 square feet. The tower itself housed offices a lunchroom an infirmary and even a school for the store’s employees. The observation deck on the 20th floor offered breathtaking views. It was a bustling hub of activity.
Imagine the elegant ladies and dapper gentlemen ascending in the original elevators. They would shop on the lower floors then take a break at the lunchroom and end their day on the observation deck. This majestic building housed a school for young employees. A gentleman’s club also catered to male workers. A hospital on site provided medical assistance. In 1958 May Company purchased Daniels & Fisher. The store eventually moved out leaving the tower vacant. A time of uncertainty followed.
Then came the 1960s and 70s Denver’s urban renewal project almost destroyed the tower. However preservationists rallied saving this landmark from demolition. In 1981 the Daniels & Fisher Tower was renovated becoming residential and office space. The massive bell still remains high atop the tower a silent sentinel of Denver’s past. The Clocktower Cabaret now occupies the basement level adding a vibrant modern touch to this historic building. The clock faces on each side still work.
