“A beacon of guidance,” someone whispers, gazing at the structure before us. This is the Sarutahiko Shrine, a place where two powerful deities are celebrated. Sarutahiko Shrine, meaning “Sarutahiko and Uzume”, is dedicated to the deities Sarutahiko Okami and Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto. Sarutahiko, a figure of strength and direction, is revered as a guide. Legend tells us he was the one who greeted Ninigi-no-Mikoto, grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu, as he descended to earth. Imagine him, a towering figure with a long beard and a determined gaze, symbolizing safe passage and the power of leadership. But it was Ame-no-Uzume, his wife, who brought joy and laughter back to the world. When Amaterasu hid herself away in a cave, plunging the world into darkness, it was Ame-no-Uzume’s captivating dance that drew her out, restoring light to the land. The Sarutahiko Shrine, therefore, celebrates both the strength of guidance and the uplifting power of mirth and art, reminding us that life’s journey is best traveled with a balance of determination and lightheartedness.
