A century’s worth of prayers whispers from these very stones. Welcome to the Queenship of Mary Church. This beautiful church stands proudly in Chintadripet Chennai. Its story begins not as Queenship of Mary but as St Lazarus Church. In 1904 a small community gathered here. It was then a substation of St Anthony’s Church in Pudupet.

The Queenship of Mary Church wasn’t always the grand structure we see today. Initially a humble chapel it grew. Its congregation expanded to around 2500 members. It flourished near the iconic Ripon Building and the Corporation of Madras. This growth wasn’t without challenges. In 1929 a significant shift occurred. The Cooum River divided Madras into two distinct dioceses. St Lazarus Church along with St Antony’s of Narasingapuram became part of the Mylapore Diocese. This transfer represented a significant moment in the church’s history.

The church underwent a remarkable transformation in 1952. A new church was constructed. It was consecrated on December 18 1955. Auxiliary Bishop Francis Arthur Carvalho presided over this momentous occasion. The name changed to Queenship of Mary Church. Reflecting a new era in its history.

The dedication to St Lazarus was replaced after the Second Vatican Council. It was rededicated to the Queenship of Mary. This reflects a significant shift in Catholic theological emphasis.

But the story of the Queenship of Mary Church doesn’t end there. In 2003 under the guidance of Reverend M V Jacob another renovation took place. A new church was built. A grotto was added to commemorate the church’s centenary celebrations in 2004. This reflects the ongoing devotion and commitment of the community. A remarkable detail the church’s history includes a reported revelation. The Most Holy and Miraculous Mother of Chintadripet appeared to Mrs Devi. This happened at 11 am on August 14 2007. This event added another layer to the church’s rich tapestry of faith and miracle.

Today the Queenship of Mary Church stands as a testament to faith resilience and community. It continues to serve its devoted congregation. It’s a living history a beacon of hope. It stands in the heart of Chennai. It continues to inspire awe and devotion. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of faith.
