Founded in 1977 by Massachusetts General Hospital the MGH Institute of Health Professions stands before you. It’s a testament to Boston’s rich medical history. This wasn’t always a graduate school though. For over a century before 1977 Massachusetts General Hospital ran its own School of Nursing. It only awarded diplomas. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts changed that in 1977. That year the hospital began granting academic degrees. The Massachusetts General Hospital Academic Division was launched.

The MGH Institute didn’t get its current name until 1980. Its first students arrived that year. The first Master of Science in Physical Therapy degrees were granted in 1983. A milestone year was 1985. The Institute became its own corporation separate from the hospital. It moved to its current location in the Charlestown Navy Yard in 2001. Now it boasts over 159000 square feet in seven buildings.

Today the MGH Institute offers a range of degrees. These include Doctor of Occupational Therapy Doctor of Physical Therapy and a Master of Science in Nursing. Many other programs exist too. There are also post-professional programs. These include a PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences and a Doctor of Nursing Practice. The Institute’s commitment to advanced education is clear. A little-known fact is that in 2013 the Institute launched something new. It started New England’s first Doctor of Occupational Therapy program. This highlighted its commitment to innovation.
