Fielding Garr a widower with seven children arrived in Utah in 1847. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints tasked him with a monumental undertaking establishing a ranch on Antelope Island in 1848. This wasn’t just any ranch. It was to manage the church’s livestock the personal herds of prominent figures like Brigham Young and Heber C Kimbell. Garr built a five-room adobe house a rock milk house and a corral. He and his family lived there for years.
Life on the Fielding Garr Ranch wasn’t easy. Isolation was a constant companion. Fresh water was scarce. Yet the Garr family persevered. They built a life centered around their ranch. They raised livestock and cultivated crops. But tragedy struck in 1855. Fielding Garr fell from his horse and died. Briant Stringham took over. Stringham was a remarkable man with four wives and twenty-seven children. His last wife was Fielding Garr’s daughter. He and his sons further developed the Fielding Garr Ranch. They expanded operations. They even used a large flat-bottom boat to transport livestock to and from the island.
The Fielding Garr Ranch changed hands in 1870. John Dooly Sr purchased the entire island. He established the Island Improvement Company expanding the ranch’s operations. He introduced twelve bison to the island. Under the stewardship of John Dooly Jr the ranch became a major sheep operation boasting over 10000 sheep. It was one of the largest in the western United States. Changing market conditions shifted the focus back to cattle in the 1950s. Throughout the years the ranch was improved and remodeled. The Anshutz Corporation acquired the Fielding Garr Ranch in 1972. But in 1981 the state of Utah purchased the land. Antelope Island became a state park. High lake levels made the ranch inaccessible for some time. It wasn’t until 1993 that the Fielding Garr Ranch opened to the public on a limited basis. A major investment paved the eleven-mile road leading to the ranch making it truly accessible to visitors. Today the Fielding Garr Ranch stands as a proud symbol of pioneer ingenuity and hard work.
