“Have you ever heard the distinctive bray of an African Penguin?” Right here at the Denver Zoo, you can meet the zoo’s colony of African Penguins at the Pinnacol African Penguin Point. This exhibit isn’t just a home for these charismatic birds. It’s a vibrant recreation of their natural habitat, modeled after Boulder Beach in South Africa. The African Penguin has been a beloved resident of the Denver Zoo since Bird World opened in 1975. Their former home was slated for demolition. So the zoo transformed a section of Predator Ridge into a state-of-the-art habitat for these endangered birds.

The Pinnacol African Penguin Point is cleverly divided into two distinct areas. On the west side, a massive 10,000-gallon wave pool mimics the churning ocean currents of their native South Africa. Two powerful pumps and four high-rate sand filters work tirelessly to circulate and clean the water. A chiller and heat pump ensure the perfect temperature for these aquatic acrobats. You can witness their playful “porpoising” through 3.5 feet of underwater viewing. The east side offers a tranquil dry land area, complete with soft sand and cozy burrows. It’s a peaceful retreat where these fascinating birds can rest and socialize.

The Denver Zoo is home to seventeen African Penguins, ranging in age from two to thirty years old. All were born in captivity. The zoo has an impressive 40-year history of successful African Penguin breeding. They hope to expand the colony to 25 birds. This will involve breeding and acquiring penguins from other zoos. The zoo’s commitment extends beyond its own walls. Denver Zoo staff members travel to Cape Town, South Africa to assist SANCCOB. SANCCOB is the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds. They rehabilitate abandoned African Penguin chicks and release them back into the wild at Boulder Beach and other natural habitats.

The Denver Zoo’s African Penguins are part of a larger Species Survival Plan under the American Zoo Association. There are approximately 500 African Penguins in North American zoos. This collaborative effort aims to ensure the long-term survival of this endangered species. By visiting the Pinnacol African Penguin Point, you are directly supporting these vital conservation efforts. You’re also getting an up-close look at these remarkable creatures. So, next time you’re at the Denver Zoo, make sure to visit the African Penguins. Listen for their distinctive calls. Watch them waddle and swim. You’ll be captivated by their charm and inspired by the zoo’s dedication to their survival.
