In 1890, a grand building arose, initially known as the 14th District School. This building, later renamed Fremont School, held a prominent place in Salt Lake City’s history. It stood proudly at approximately 150 South 300 West, on the east side of 300 West. Fremont School educated generations of Salt Lake City children. Sadly, this historic landmark met its end in 1968 when it was demolished. Now, a different Fremont Elementary School exists in Taylorsville, Utah, part of the Granite School District. This current Fremont Elementary, located at 4249 South Atherton Drive, serves a new generation. The school day runs from 9:05 am to 3:45 pm, with shortened days ending at 1:40 pm. Dr. Cecilia Jabakumar leads the school as Principal. During summer, you can reach the school via phone at 385-646-4836 or email at ccjabakumar@graniteschools.org. For registration and other inquiries, the main office number is 385-646-4834. The counseling center can be reached at 385-646-2372, and the preschool line is 385-646-0389 or 385-646-5926. While the original Fremont School building is gone, its legacy reminds us of the constant evolution of our educational landscape. The new Fremont Elementary carries the torch, continuing the tradition of learning and growth in a different time and place.
