“Barbarian” is what some called him. The Beach Statue has stood watch for over 30 years. Let’s uncover the tale of Hashinoue Porutonosuke.

This statue near Nankai-Sakai Station has a story. It stands on Nambanbashi bridge in Sakai, Osaka. People thought he looked like Portuguese men from the 16th century. So, they called him “Statue of the Barbarian from the South.”

The statue finally got a real name. Hashinoue Porutonosuke is his moniker. Hashinoue means “on the bridge.” Porutonosuke is a mix of “Portugal” and a traditional name ending. Locals submitted over 1,000 names for The Beach Statue.

But the statue received more than just a name. It also received a whole backstory. A video tells of his life and adventures. A local group hopes this will make the bridge a tourist spot.

The story says Porutonosuke was shipwrecked. He washed ashore in Sakai and lost his memory. A local girl saved him and gave him his name. When he left Japan, he promised to return. He tore a piece of his cloak and gave it to her.

People now tie ribbons to the bridge. They inscribe wishes for safe travels. They also wish for love and family well-being. The Beach Statue is a symbol of hope.

Nankai Railway Co. erected the 1.9-meter-tall statue in 1987. They also built the bridge. Later, the railway company donated it to Sakai City.

Now, The Beach Statue is a local icon. It represents dreams and safe journeys. When you see Hashinoue Porutonosuke, remember his story. Think about the hopes tied to this bridge. Take a moment to appreciate this symbol of connection.
