Clutching my grandson’s hand, we entered Wakefield Playground. It was buzzing with kids. The newly renovated playground was a splash of vibrant color against the Bronx sky. Wakefield Playground. It’s more than just swings and slides. It’s a testament to community spirit and the power of collaboration. Just a few years ago, this playground was in dire need of repair. The equipment was outdated. The courts were cracked. It wasn’t a place that inspired joy. Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz saw the state of disrepair and knew something had to be done. He, along with Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and others, rallied for change. They secured a whopping $5.2 million to completely rebuild Wakefield Playground. This wasn’t just a patch-up job. This was a total transformation. The renovation brought brand new play equipment. A refreshing spray shower was installed, a godsend during those sweltering summer days. Two new basketball courts gleamed in the sun. A junior soccer field offered space for budding athletes to practice their skills. They even added an additional entrance for increased safety. An ADA-accessible ramp now connects the upper and lower levels, making the playground inclusive for everyone. New paving, plantings, seating, and drinking fountains completed the makeover. Wakefield Playground is now a place where children can laugh, play, and create memories. It’s a symbol of what can be achieved when a community comes together.
