The story of Funatsu Bridge is a tale of transformation. The Nagahori River was reclaimed in 1964. The Funatsu Bridge became an overpass. The bridge was no longer needed. It was reconstructed as an overpass. It added a unique atmosphere to Osaka. A completion ceremony was held on November 23, 1964.
Funatsu Bridge even made its way into Hollywood. The movie “Black Rain” used the bridge for one of its scenes. The Funatsu Bridge provided a backdrop.
In 1997, Crysta Nagahori opened. It is an underground shopping mall. Part of the bridge was restored. A part of the handrail was restored. It was used for center dividers. This provides a retro atmosphere above the modern shopping mall. Water also flows under that bridge.
The original wooden bridge was replaced by an iron bridge in 1873. In 1909, the iron bridge was replaced. It was replaced by a stone bridge. The construction of this Japanese-made bridge was completed in 1909. A magnificent opening ceremony was held. The bridge had a western touch and elaborate design. Many picture postcards were issued.
