Before the proud moment of Suriname’s independence from the Netherlands in 1975, this square was known by different names – Oranjeplein, meaning Orange Square, and Gouvernementsplein, meaning Government Square. It’s surrounded by significant buildings like the Presidential Palace and the Ministry of Finance, whispering stories of power and decision-making. But look closer and you’ll find the scars of history etched on the very heart of Onafhankelijkheidsplein. On a somber day in 1996, the building that housed the National Assembly of Suriname was ravaged by fire. The building couldn’t withstand the flames, but from its ashes rose a phoenix. The National Assembly found a new home in the former park house, standing as a symbol of resilience for Suriname.
