Did you know Sheridan Colorado was once two separate towns? Let’s journey back to the late 1800s. Before Sheridan existed there was Petersburg and Sheridan Junction. Imagine the dusty Santa Fe Trail snaking past. Peter Magnus a Swedish immigrant founded Petersburg in 1873. He even introduced sugar beets to Colorado. This small settlement thrived. Later Isaac McBroom brother of John McBroom laid out Sheridan Junction. These two unique communities eventually merged. In 1890 they officially became Sheridan. This wasn’t just a random name. It honored General Philip Sheridan a prominent figure in the US Army. A military post Fort Logan was established nearby in 1887. It was initially hoped to be named Fort Sheridan. Ironically it was named after General John A Logan. Fort Logan now serves as a mental health facility. Sheridan’s growth wasn’t solely due to its strategic location. Its residents built a strong community. Today Sheridan is a vibrant city a blend of residential commercial and industrial areas. It’s home to five schools and several parks like Sheridan Community Park and Barnes Park. There is also a thriving River Point retail district built on a former landfill.
