Step into the hallowed halls of the Church of the Holy Family. This isn’t just any church. It’s a living testament to faith perseverance and community. Imagine the summer of 1881. Archbishop Wood chose this very spot on Hermitage Street. He purchased the land from the Striffling family. It was then part of the Smick Estate. The future Church of the Holy Family was born.
The Church of the Holy Family’s story began humbly. In 1885 Reverend Michael C McEnroe became the first pastor. He erected a simple frame chapel with unplastered walls. Think of it a small structure. Singers from nearby parishes helped celebrate its dedication. This humble beginning marks the start of a remarkable journey.
Father McEnroe wasn’t one to rest on his laurels. He expanded his residence. He oversaw the construction of the present church building in 1897. This grand structure replaced the simple frame chapel. The rectory offered a breathtaking view of the Schuylkill River. It remains a testament to his vision.
The Church of the Holy Family’s impact grew. Father McEnroe started classes for Holy Family School in 1906. He used the old chapel as the school’s first building. His legacy extended far beyond bricks and mortar. He instilled a spirit of faith and community. That spirit continues to thrive today.
After Father McEnroe’s death in 1910 Reverend Joseph J Hannigan took the reins. He built the main building of Holy Family School in 1911. He purchased buildings to serve as a convent and a church. His contributions to the Church of the Holy Family are undeniable.
Reverend William P Grace followed. From 1916 to 1935 he served as pastor. He tackled the church’s debt clearing it by 1930. He also constructed the new rectory. He died there in 1935 a testament to his dedication.
Subsequent pastors continued the legacy. Reverend Joseph E Marley oversaw renovations. He improved the grounds. He repainted the church in 1951. He built a school annex. He was a beloved figure in the community. Reverend John W Gsell implemented the changes of Vatican II. Reverend C Joseph Goodyear oversaw the centennial celebration in 1985. Monsignor Patrick E Sweeney became the eighth pastor in 2014. His tenure continues the strong tradition of the Church of the Holy Family.
