In 1908 a family chose to build a home. This was no ordinary house. It was Shung Hing House also known as the Chow family home. Located in Guangzhou’s bustling Shamian district this hundred-year-old building stands as a testament to history.

Shung Hing House is more than just bricks and mortar. It mirrors the turbulent times of early 20th-century China. The Chow family a prominent overseas Chinese family built it during a period of significant upheaval. The construction spanned twelve years concluding in 1919. The building reflects the family’s deep roots in Cantonese culture. Their belief in their ancestral homeland is clearly shown in the design.

The architectural style is a unique blend of Western and Southern Chinese influences. The main house is two stories high. It features red brick and a tiled roof. Inside there are three wells a Western-style arched doorway and traditional Chinese features. The library wing meanwhile is purely Chinese in style. This contrasts sharply with the main house showing the eclectic tastes of its builders.

The house has witnessed both glory and hardship. During the Japanese occupation of World War II Shung Hing House became a refuge. It sheltered dozens of refugees. The second floor became a Japanese military recreational space. The family’s descendants recall stories of the Japanese soldiers using the house for dance performances and parties.

After the war the Chow family donated the house to the Fourth Field Army. It served first as a classroom. Later it was used as administrative offices and a health clinic. In 1950 a radio transmitter was installed on the roof. From here the first radio broadcasts were made throughout the city a pivotal moment in Guangzhou’s media history. The house was given back to the family.

Later the house fell into disrepair. Then two professors from the South China University of Technology stepped in. They spearheaded a campaign to restore the house. This involved substantial fundraising and collaborative efforts. Today Shung Hing House stands restored. It functions as both a museum and a community center. It hosts book clubs lectures and architectural studies. The house has found a new life. It is a powerful symbol of Guangzhou’s cultural heritage. It is also a testament to the perseverance and collaboration that can save a piece of history.
