The Ellie Caulkins Opera House is Denver’s premier venue, nestled within the historic Quigg Newton Denver Municipal Auditorium. Its story begins long before its 2005 reopening, a tale stretching back to 1908 when the auditorium first opened its doors. The building has been reborn multiple times. Notably in the early 2000s, it underwent a massive transformation. Everything but the historic shell was rebuilt. From its ashes rose a lyric opera house, a testament to Denver’s cultural spirit. The renovation was a collaborative effort, funded by seat tax revenues, bond proceeds, private donations, and a generous contribution from the Caulkins family. The opera house was named in honor of Denver’s First Lady of Opera, Ellie Caulkins. Today, the Ellie Caulkins Opera House is a world-class venue. The four levels—balcony, loge, mezzanine, and orchestra—offer 2,225 seats, each equipped with the Figaro Seatback Titling System. This system allows patrons to follow along with translations of the performances. The acoustics are exceptional, ensuring every note reaches every ear.
