Whispers of a forgotten past linger around Gadloch. This isn’t just any loch. Gadloch near Lenzie in North Lanarkshire holds secrets within its depths. It’s a freshwater loch a tranquil beauty with a tumultuous history.

Originally much larger than it is today Gadloch was dramatically reshaped. A drainage tunnel altered its size. Local legend whispers of Napoleonic prisoners of war digging this tunnel. However the tunnel likely predates their time. This drained land then became farmland. Easter Gadloch Farm an 18th-century structure stood empty for years. It has since been renovated. Parkhillhead Farm watches over the loch from the south.

The changing water levels tell a story. The tunnel became compromised. Water levels rose nearly to their original height. Recent repairs have stabilized the loch’s size. But the stories of the loch don’t end there.

Gadloch has been a winter wonderland. In the cold months thick ice covers its surface. For generations people have used Gadloch for curling. Postcards from 1910 show curlers enjoying the ice. Even in 2010-2011 curlers still played on Gadloch’s frozen surface. The Cadder Curling Club once used an old railway wagon by the loch’s edge as their clubhouse.

Gadloch’s allure extends to the birdwatchers. A variety of birds visit this serene location. Even rare and non-native species have appeared. Some believe these were escaped birds. In the 1970s white pelicans graced the loch.

However the loch has also witnessed tragedy. In 1974 a young boy died after falling through the ice. A more mysterious incident occurred in the 1980s. A murder suspect claimed to have disposed of a body in Gadloch. Despite searches no body was ever found. More recently in 2011 a man tragically drowned trying to save his dog that had fallen through the ice. Both lost their lives that day.

The unpredictable nature of Gadloch is also evident in its flooding. Flooding has closed nearby roads for years. The collapsed drainage tunnel has worsened the problem. Lenzie Golf Course and surrounding farmland have suffered. In 2011-2012 the flooding damaged the golf course. Four fairways had to be completely relaid. The Lenzie community council created a website section to address the ongoing issues. The frozen loch in winter poses a danger too. People have been hospitalized after falling through the ice.

Gadloch is more than just a pretty loch. It’s a place of history folklore and tragedy. Its story reflects the dynamic relationship between nature and human intervention. It’s a landscape shaped by both human actions and the forces of nature a testament to the enduring power of both.
