Is there a more welcoming phrase than “where everybody is somebody”? Right here, at the Northside Progressive Baptist Church, you’ll find that sentiment woven into the very fabric of this community. Northside Progressive Baptist Church has deep roots in its neighborhood. It began its life in 1962 with a simple act of faith: four men gathering in a home to study God’s word. That dedication blossomed under the leadership of Reverend Cleothus Montgomery, the church’s founding pastor. He led the congregation for an impressive 54 years! During his tenure, the Northside Progressive Baptist Church wasn’t content to merely exist within the community; it actively shaped it. They became a beacon of support, offering spiritual guidance, engaging in local politics, and championing education. As the congregation grew, so too did their physical space. They moved to larger accommodations three times before finally settling in their current location in February 2000. Today, you see the church in its full glory, including the Cleothus Montgomery Family Life Center, a testament to their ongoing commitment to the community. While Reverend Montgomery has passed the torch, his legacy of inclusivity and service continues under Pastor Valor Cooper. He ensures the Northside Progressive Baptist Church remains a vibrant testament to faith in action, a place “where everybody is somebody BECAUSE Jesus Christ is Lord.”
