In 1875, a determined group of African Americans in Charleston, seeking a new spiritual home, founded the Holy Trinity Reformed Episcopal Church. They had left the Protestant Episcopal Church and embraced the Reformed Episcopal Church, a new denomination. The Holy Trinity Reformed Episcopal Church quickly became a beacon of hope and resilience for the community. Just a year later, the congregation purchased the land at 51 Bull Street, laying the foundation for their future church. In 1880, a remarkable feat occurred: the church building was constructed in just three weeks, for a mere $1,000. This swift construction was a testament to the community’s dedication. The cornerstone was laid by the Right Rev. Peter Fayssoux Stevens, the first bishop of the Reformed Episcopal Church in South Carolina, adding a touch of historical significance to the church’s beginnings. This simple wooden structure at 51 Bull Street, with its classic portico and balanced proportions, radiates an aura of dignity. The Holy Trinity Reformed Episcopal Church stands not only as a place of worship, but as a testament to the strength and faith of the community that built it.
