A silent guardian, it holds back the waters of Cherry Creek, a tributary of the South Platte River. Cherry Creek Dam isn’t just a marvel of engineering. The Cherry Creek Dam, completed in 1950 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, stretches an impressive 14,300 feet and towers 141 feet high. This earthen barrier creates the Cherry Creek Reservoir, a sprawling body of water covering 880 acres. But the story of Cherry Creek Dam begins long before its construction. The creek has a long history, flowing through the land for centuries, used by Native Americans, trappers, and settlers. The fertile lands surrounding the creek were a hub for agriculture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Dairy farms, orchards, and fields thrived. However, Cherry Creek had a darker side. It was prone to devastating floods. One of the earliest recorded floods, in 1864, claimed the lives of 15 to 20 people in Auraria. Then, in 1933, disaster struck again. Torrential rains caused the Castlewood Dam upstream to burst, sending a 20-foot wall of water surging down Cherry Creek towards Denver. This catastrophe spurred the city into action. The need for effective flood control became paramount, leading to the construction of the Cherry Creek Dam. The dam’s impact was immediate and significant. During the 1965 Denver flood, the Cherry Creek Dam held back the upstream flow. This significantly reduced the flood’s impact on the city. Today, Cherry Creek Dam serves not just as a flood control structure. The reservoir it creates is also a popular recreation area. Cherry Creek State Park, established in 1959, offers various activities, from camping and fishing to horseback riding and even a shooting range. Cherry Creek Dam stands as a reminder of the power of nature. It also shows how human ingenuity can protect us from it, turning a potential threat into a valuable resource. The dam transformed Cherry Creek from a force of destruction into a source of life, leisure, and prosperity for the Denver community.
