Did you know John C Fremont High School opened its doors in 1924? It stands as a landmark in the Florence neighborhood. The school is named after John C Frémont. He was an explorer a military officer and a politician.
John C Fremont High School is a Title 1 co-educational public high school. It is located in South Los Angeles. Fremont serves several Los Angeles neighborhoods. It also serves the unincorporated community of Florence-Graham. Some Florence-Graham sections are jointly zoned to Fremont and David Starr Jordan High School. The Avalon Gardens public housing complex is zoned to Fremont.
Initially, John C Fremont High School was designed as a whites-only school. The city built it to reduce enrollment at Manual Arts High School. This school is a few miles north.
Before the school existed the area was mostly undeveloped. The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company was a major employer. The school became a key part of a new real estate development called Goodyear Park. Banks sold tracts for new single-family homes. These homes attracted working-class families. Proximity to Goodyear and the new school was a big draw.
Race restrictions prevented non-white people from buying homes. Black people also had fewer opportunities to get loans. The Fair Housing Act of 1968 changed this.
By November 1924 John C Fremont had to construct two new bungalows to keep up with attendance. By 1925 the school opened a new science building. Plans for a gymnasium also emerged.
During World War II the school operated a night adult school. It offered blueprint reading mathematics and civilian defense. Typing and bookkeeping were also taught tuition-free.
John C Fremont High School was one of the first schools divided into small learning communities. These SLCs aimed to personalize instruction. There were once thirteen SLCs. Each averaged 400 students. By September 2003 only four SLCs remained. The school switched to a block schedule system. Today there are three SLCs: MESA LSJ and SGMA. MAGNET is a separate school hosted at John C Fremont High School.
The school’s motto is “Find a path or make one”. The school colors are burgundy and gray. The team name is Pathfinders. The school newspaper is called “The Pathfinder”.
John C Fremont High School has produced many notable alumni. These include Ricky Bell NFL player and College Football Hall of Famer and Dr Dre music producer. Joe Caldwell NBA player and Olympic gold medalist also attended Fremont. Kenneth Hahn Los Angeles county supervisor and Henry Waxman California representative are also alumni.
The San Fernando Earthquake of 1971 forced many buildings to be torn down. They rebuilt them in a more earthquake-safe style. In the early 2000s Fremont had over 5000 students. The opening of South Region High School 2 in 2011 reduced student numbers. The enrollment for 2023-2024 is 2002 students. The student-to-teacher ratio is 18.94.
