A wave of vibrant energy washes over you. You stand before the Denver School of the Arts. Its history unfolds before your eyes.

The Denver School of the Arts wasn’t always here on Montview Boulevard. It began in the late 1980s as a program within Manual High School. A passionate group believed the arts were crucial for student success. They envisioned a dedicated school. Their dream took flight thanks to community support and the backing of figures like actor Raymond Burr.

In 1991 DSA opened. Initially it housed students in grades six through nine at Cole Middle School. Ninth graders attended Manual High for academics. They were shuttled to Cole for arts classes. The school quickly gained a reputation for excellence. After six years its first standalone building opened. The historic Byers Junior High housed DSA. The school awarded its first diplomas in 1998.

By 2003 DSA outgrew Byers. Again community leaders and the school rallied. They secured funds for a new facility. The former Lamont School of Music building was renovated. It became DSA’s current impressive home. The building boasts a 550-seat theater. It includes a recital hall and dance theater.

Today Denver School of the Arts thrives. Eleven majors are offered. These include dance visual arts and creative writing. Students even wear color-coded lanyards indicating their grade level. Sixth graders wear black. Seventh graders wear purple. Each grade has its own unique color. DSA’s notable alumni include Tony Award winner Gabriel Ebert and Project Runway All Stars winner Mondo Guerra. Their success shows DSA’s impact on students and the community. Their achievements inspire future generations of artists.

The Denver School of the Arts is more than a school. It’s a testament to perseverance. It is a vibrant hub for artistic expression. It represents a commitment to nurturing young talent. It’s a place where dreams are nurtured. The school continues to inspire. It continues to shape young lives. It remains a beacon of creativity in Denver.
