Often called the M-30 Mosque because of its location near the M-30 highway, this grand structure holds a unique place in Spain’s cultural landscape. The Centro Cultural Islámica y Mezquita de Madrid stands as a testament to years of planning and international collaboration. In 1976, eighteen Muslim countries envisioned a mosque in Madrid. Their dream finally materialized in 1992, thanks to the generous funding from King Fahd of Saudi Arabia. Upon its completion, the Centro Cultural Islámica y Mezquita de Madrid became the largest mosque in Europe, a title it held proudly for a time. Its six floors encompass a sprawling 12,000 square meters. The mosque itself is just the beginning. The complex also houses a school, a library stocked with books in Arabic, Spanish, English, and French, as well as exhibition halls, a museum, an auditorium, a gymnasium, and even living quarters for the director and imam. The interior design draws inspiration from the majestic Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba, particularly its breathtaking array of columns. While exploring the grounds, take note of the minaret. Interestingly, it’s only the second minaret built in Madrid during the 20th century, the first belonging to the Mezquita Central.
