“Designated a historical landmark.” That’s quite the honor isn’t it? I’m standing before the Historic Greater Friendship Baptist Church. Its story began in November 1955. Rev. Ronald Bibbs and Rev. Jenkins led the charge.
Several dedicated members organized the church. They were Sis Florence Anderson. Also Sis. Lula Bridgeman and Sis. Caldonia Brown. Deacon Foster and Deacon Hollis Martin were involved. Sis Julia Swanson and Mother Mozelle Swoopes completed the group.
The church first called C.W. Alexander as its pastor. Greater Friendship Baptist Church moved several times. They met at Hubbard Memorial Hall. It was on 83rd and Cedar Avenue. Then they settled here on Arlington Avenue.
Pastor Alexander later resigned. Calvin T. Nelson became pastor. He served Greater Friendship Baptist Church faithfully. He remained until his passing.
Rev. Larry Wayne Howard took over in May 1972. He guided Greater Friendship Baptist Church for 50 years. Many achievements happened under his leadership. Numerous souls were saved and the membership grew.
Because of its importance Greater Friendship has been designated a historical landmark. The church is now known as “The Historic Greater Friendship Baptist Church”. This title reflects its lasting impact.
Pastor Howard retired in September 2022. Rev. D. Calvin Wade was called as pastor in May 2023. He brings a vision of hope for the future of Greater Friendship Baptist Church.
Pastor Wade is originally from Cleveland Ohio. Interestingly Greater Friendship Baptist Church also exists in Cleveland, Ohio. He was licensed as a minister in 2009. This happened at Morning Star Baptist Church. Rev. Doctor Earl Preston Jr. mentored him. He was ordained in 2012 at Second Baptist Church of Medina. Rev. Doctor Cornell P. Carter led the service.
His background includes influence from Robert L. Hubbard. Hubbard led Crawford Road Christian Church. Pastor Wade studied sociology and urban studies. He is currently studying psychology.
He is married to Melodie S. Wade. They have three daughters. They are De’Ja E. Wade, Cadence Z. Wade, and Gia L. Wade. Pastor Wade feels honored. He wants to preach teach and serve.
Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church has a clear mission. They honor Jesus. They want to make disciples. They aim to reach those who do not attend church. This includes Southwest Houston, Missouri City and Stafford. They want to equip believers. This will help them reach their ministry potential.
They achieve this through fellowship. Also they use Biblical teaching. They demonstrate love through service. Opportunities for evangelism are key. Spiritual worship is also important at Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church.
