Eight feet of water. That’s how high the floodwaters rose after Hurricane Katrina. Imagine the devastation inside Saint Dominic Catholic Church.

Saint Dominic Catholic Church stands proudly in the Lakeview section of New Orleans. It’s more than just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the resilience of a community. It’s a vital part of Lakeview’s history.

Originally the first Catholic services in Lakeview were held in a dance hall. That’s right a dance hall! Then in 1944 the first church building was completed on the current site. The parish grew rapidly. Lakeview boomed after World War II. Saint Dominic Parish became one of the largest in the city.

The present church building was constructed in the 1960s. It’s a striking structure. Architect Irving Kohler designed it. Its stunning stained-glass windows are truly remarkable. They were created by the Botz und Miesen Studio of Cologne Germany. These windows depict local elements. You’ll notice the Spanish moss. They also reflect Dominican beliefs and practices. The artist Franz Pauli designed the striking abstract windows in the transept.

But Hurricane Katrina severely damaged the church. The floodwaters inundated the nave and sanctuary. Pews furnishings and the organ were destroyed. The church has since been restored. However the fate of the Wicks pipe organ a three manual 40-rank instrument remains uncertain.

Despite the challenges Saint Dominic Catholic Church remains a beacon of faith and community. It’s a symbol of New Orleans resilience and the enduring spirit of its people. The church continues to serve its community. It provides a place for prayer reflection and connection. It remains a vital center of the Lakeview neighborhood. It is a place where history faith and community intertwine. Take a moment to appreciate the stories etched into its walls and stained glass. Let the beauty of Saint Dominic Catholic Church leave a lasting impression on your heart.
